It is an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event on the men's tour and a Premier Mandatory event on the women's tour and is played on hard courts. The Miami Masters was renamed the Sony Ericsson Open. The 12-day Sony Ericsson Open is one of the largest tennis tournaments outside the four Grand Slam tournaments. The prestigious top tier APT World Tour Master 1000 competition consists of nine tournaments played in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Roma, Madrid, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris.
