Del Potro and Wawrinka win at the ATP World Tour Finals

Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka marked his debut in the ATP World Tour Finals by defeating Czech fifth seed Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-7 (0/7), 6-3 on Monday.

Having outshone fellow Swiss and 17-times grand-slam champion Federer at this year's U.S. Open, Wawrinka showed he belonged in the elite season-ender with a dazzling performance at the 02 Arena to edge out fifth seed Berdych.

The Swiss player did not drop serve throughout the contest and lost just three points on his serve in the deciding set as he completed the win in two hours and 25 minutes at the O2.

In the past, Wawrinka has struggled to stay with opponents due to fatigue, but the Swiss No. 2 put the disappointment of losing the tiebreak behind him to claim a debut win to collect his eighth triumph in 13 meetings against the Czech.

Later, Juan Martin del Potro made a winning start to his campaign, coming from a set down to beat France's Richard Gasquet 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5.

Playing at the season-ending tournament for the first time since 2007, Gasquet produced some stunning shots but struggled to return del Potro's big serve in a match laced with unforced errors from both sides.

In front of a near-capacity crowd of around 17,000, the Argentine took his record since the US Open to 16 wins in 18 matches.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer meet in the same group on Tuesday.
