ATP World Tour Finals: Nadal crushes Ferrer, Djokovic beats Federer

Rafael Nadal made a winning return to the O2 Arena after two years away as he beat David Ferrer in his opening match at the ATP World Tour Finals.

The world number one began his bid for a first season-ending title with a 6-3 6-2 victory over his fellow Spaniard in one hour and 14 minutes.

Ferrer beat Nadal for only the fifth time in his career on Saturday in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters, but that statistic is vastly overshadowed by the number of victories Nadal has against Ferrer. Now 21 in total after a yesterday's triumph.

The lack of time between Paris and the World Tour Finals has been a headache for both players and organisers, and both men appeared to be feeling the pace in a first set low on quality.

Ferrer made 19 unforced errors and Nadal 10, while they managed only seven winners between them.

Nadal's record at the O2 is patchy, with five wins and six losses, while on Monday he voiced his opinion that the World Tour Finals should be played on different surfaces, not just indoor hard, where he has always struggled to play his best tennis.

Later, Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer for the second time in three days to get his ATP World Tour Finals defence off to a solid start.

Djokovic followed up Saturday's Paris semi-final victory with a 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 win at the O2 Arena.

Comfortable enough in the first set, Djokovic had the match wrapped up in the second before Federer forced a tie-break with shots to revive memories of his finest times. However, after two hours of tennis, Djokovic was 2-0 up in the third. Resistance then wilted, the last shot of the match an unreturned Djokovic serve.

The result keeps alive his slender hopes of ending the year as world number one.

Should Rafael Nadal beat Stanislas Wawrinka on Wednesday, the Spaniard will secure top spot.
